User Guide

Bedpans can be used in a range of positions while in bed or laid on the sofa. Many people use these when they are recovering from an extreme operation. The design of bedpan is easy to use, safely and hygienically collecting liquid and faeces. Plastic bed pans, on the other hand, feature lids to protect against odours. They can often be washed up 135 degrees. The contents of the bedpan should be emptied in the toilet after use.

Helping someone to use a bedpan

  1. Sprinkle a small amount of body powder on the rim of the bedpan to make it easier to slide under the person. To prevent spills, place a sheet of incontinence pad under the bedpan.
  2. Help to get the bedpan into position
    • Have the person sit up or lift up the hips slightly and then slide the bedpan under the person. If the person has difficulty lifting the hips, ask a helper to assists.
    • Turn the person to the side, gently press the bedpan against his or her bottom and turn them back onto the bedpan.
  3. The person is ready for toileting. For privacy, leave the person alone when it is safe to do so.

After the person uses the bedpan

  1. Hold the bedpan in place and help the person to roll off from the bedpan away from you. Carefully slide the bedpan away from his or her bottom.
  2. Help the person to wipe if needed.
  3. Empty the bedpan into the toilet bowl.
  4. Rinse and wash the bedpan using a disinfectant diluted with water. Dry the bedpan, ready for next use.
